#BossLadyFiles: Dealing with Criticism

Someone just criticized you. What is your first reaction? Are you angry? Sad? Oftentimes, our immediate reactions cause a lot more pain than they’re worth. In this post + video, I’ll give you a life changing tip that will give you pause before lashing out. Because trust me, we’ve all been there, and it’s neither cute nor effective.

You just came home from doin a bid

Tell me whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL

Somebody broke in and cleaned out your crib

BOY whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL

Just bought a new pair and they scuffed your shoes

Tell me whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL

Now them cops tryna throw you in them county blues

BOY whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL

-Ludacris, “Act a Fool”

You know guys, as much as I love Luda, and as much as he speaks to my soul sometimes (like here and here), I wouldn’t take his advice on this one. Why? Because when we act rashly in the heat of the moment, we always end up with regrets.

Mr. Wolf has alllll the regrets…

When someone treats you unfairly, I know how hard it can be to control yourself in the moment. But if you’re on the path of living a joyful, drama-free, and fulfilled life like I am, you’ll quickly learn this particular walk requires a lot of self-control.

Control your emotions, control your fate.

So what’s a Kurly to do when faced with criticism of any kind? The answer is really simple: walk away from it. Now, I’m not telling you to never handle it. But it is important to get some space from it. Why?

1) Clarity & Rationality

When you come back to it, you’ll be a lot more rational.

2) Diplomacy & Compassion

This rationality makes you more diplomatic. The space you’ve given yourself allows you to replace your angry feelings with compassionate ones.

3) Time & Life Evaluation

It makes you evaluate your time. Because frankly, some things aren’t worth fighting for.

This is just a sneak peak, but be sure to watch the video for a more in-depth approach. I promise it will be worth it.

And of course, if you have a friend who has a particularly tough time dealing with criticism, be sure to send him/her this link. It’s a really simple concept, but it might change the course of someone’s life.

Until next time!

Love you!!!!
